Repairing, Restoring, Reducing Waste: Sixth Formers help at District Fixers Fair
Our students never fail to impress with the amount of volunteering they take on across the district—often quietly and without seeking recognition. So it was a real pleasure to hear from Mr Le Riche, a dedicated volunteer who helps run our lunchtime computing club, that he has recently been working alongside two of our sixth formers at St Albans District Fixers (imagine The Repair Shop, but local, community‑run, and wonderfully accessible). Alex and Cailin have played an important part in welcoming visitors and logging items in need of repair.
Four years after hosting their very first Repair Fair at All Saints’ Church in Harpenden, St Albans District Fixers returned to the same venue to celebrate the start of their fifth year. The event was busier than ever: eleven skilled volunteer fixers took on a wide variety of broken electrical items, while three talented seamstresses breathed new life into well‑loved clothing and fabrics.
By the end of the day, 27 of the 41 items brought in were successfully repaired—preventing an estimated 300 kg of CO₂ emissions and giving each item a second chance. Impressive stuff.
