Banned Books Week (5-11th October)
This week, our library has been buzzing with curiosity, conversation, and a touch of rebellion as we marked Banned Books Week—a global celebration of the freedom to read and the right to access information without censorship.
Our eye-catching display of banned and challenged books has sparked lively interest and some truly thought-provoking discussions. Students and staff alike have been diving into the stories behind the bans: Why were these books silenced? What ideas did they dare to explore? And what does that say about the power of literature?
From dystopian classics to beloved children’s tales, many were surprised to discover that some of the most cherished titles on our shelves have faced censorship somewhere in the world. But fear not—every book in our display is still proudly available to borrow!
We wrapped up the week with a quiz that tested everyone’s instincts: Could you guess why a book was banned? The results were eye-opening, and the debates were brilliant.
Banned Books Week reminds us that stories matter—and that the freedom to read is worth celebrating. So come by, take a look, and maybe even check out a title that once made waves. You might just find your next favourite read hiding in plain sight.
