PRESS RELEASE FROM
ST GEORGE’S SCHOOL
TUESDAY APRIL 6th 2010
WILL’S ON A ROLL
STAR CHEF KNOCKS EM OUT
15 YEAR OLD BOY TRIUMPHS OVER 48 BUDDING CHEFS IN FINAL ROUND
Winning the new Inter House cookery competition at St George’s School William Forrester
wowed judges with spe
ciality soup.
Launched to reflect the enormous popularity of Food studies at the 1280 strong secondary school in Sun Lane Harpenden, 48 pupils got through to the final cook off last week as they divided into age categories and cooked for their Houses.
Heidi Brodie, Head of Food said it was a fierce competition.
“Anyone interested had to complete a detailed application form explaining why they wanted to do this and what their plans were. It was open to older students who may have given up Food Studies a few years ago but everyone was judged on their food production skills.”
Lower School winner was Liberty Emeny with stuffed peppers and rice, Upper School Jivana Hunt with Mexican wraps and dips, while William in Y10 stole the top place with his imaginative broad bean soup with goats cheese emulsion !
Judges included the former Hertfordshire Adviser for Technology Jenny Elms, leader of the Specialist Schools Trust national programme for Licence to Cook, which St George’s is a key leader in.
Headmaster Norman Hoare could not judge the winner –
“it was too difficult for me. Every dish was scrummy but it was fun for the judges to taste them. It was far better than the TV chef programmes as these were our pupils with their recipes in times situations producing dishes to grace any restaurant table. The whole idea came from our Student Voice movement and will now join a distinguished series of competitions between our four houses , which already includes, music, drama, art, chess, dance, and of course all the sports you can think of.”
