ST GEORGE’S VA SCHOOL MEDIA RELEASE

TUESDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 2011

PUPILS RAISE £4,200 in FIVE Days

£840 A DAY RAISED BY PREFECTS FOR THEIR

TOP THREE CHARITIES

LUNCHTIME SHOWS AND NOVELTY ACTS

RUN BY PUPILS AND STAFF GROSS HUNDREDS

The annual Senior Prefects Week of Fun, known affectionately as SPWOF at the 1300 strong St George’s School netted a grand sum of £4,200 when all the pennies and coins had been counted last week.

Five days of lunchtime extravaganza based on TV shows and musicals which also involved staff dominated the diary for the week as well as tuck shop sales, bucket collections and a non-uniform day.

Local Harpenden MENCAP, the national Teenage Cancer Trust and St George’s link School in Ghana will each receive an equal share before Christmas, the three charities having been decided by the senior Prefect and School Captains, Sam Stain and Sarah Ingram.

Sarah commented

“ It was an incredible week. Every ticket for the shows sold out fast and there was great disappointment when the Assembly Hall was full.  Each of our fours Houses ran a lunchtime and the School Captains and staff featured in Friday’s Sound of Music and highlights from West End Musicals. It took months of preparation but we pulled it off.”

Headmaster Norman Hoare congratulated his Year 13’s on an amazing week of fun and the way that each show educated audiences about the three chosen charities which will get well over a £1000 each.

He was especially proud that enough money would be going to their link school in Ghana to buy a plot of land to build a new part of the secondary school they are supporting with Harpenden Scouts who have a long association with the area. Barbara Gerwien a former member of staff who retired in August is just off to spend time at the school and will take them the cash.

It was a whole school effort which has become a tradition for the senior prefects to harness good will amongst all our pupils. It provides training and leadership and we are incredibly proud of what went on and the magnificent sums available to give to the charities.

However what they learnt and what we all came to appreciate about the work of these charities because of our integrated approach to fund raising was in our opinion as valuable as the cash we will hand over.”
