PUPILS PART OF ICELANDIC CEREMONY
ST GEORGE’S SIXTH FORMERS HIT FRONT PAGE OF ICELAND’S DAILY NEWS
WELCOME OF NEW COASTGUARD SHIP WITNESSED BY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Arriving on the eastern coast of Iceland, 70 St George’s Sixth Formers took part in the nation’s welcoming ceremony for a new patrol vessel. Captured for posterity their photograph also appeared on the front page of the Frettabladid newspaper, Iceland’s leading news sheet.
Mrs Carole Apsa w
ho regularly takes over 70 sixth formers to Iceland was thrilled
when the group was part of the ceremony and appeared on the front page. “We knew
it was very important for the port and they fired their historic cannon to welcome
this new ship which patrols the waters.’
The 70 students had spent three days studying the geology and geography of Iceland and enjoyed some of the best weather of all their regular visits.
Headmaster Norman Hoare complimented the students for their exemplary studies and praise they received from the local population. ‘It is a wonderful trip which is over subscribed every time Carole launches it. It is offered to all sixth formers not just those doing A level Geography, and staff from all disciplines are very keen to be picked to see this fascinating country. I have signed up for a place on the 2013 visit!’
The group were unaware of their media prominence until boarding the plane home when they spotted their pastured on page 1. The photographer Oskar P Fridriksson has since been in touch with the school and given permission for his photograph to be used and has sent some spectacular shots of the port and ship.
