We now need YOUR provisional applications for…
Great Curry Run 2012
“Run it – Walk it – Ride it – Stagger it”
Saturday 21st April 2012, 9am
Thanks to the efforts of the whole school community last March, we managed to raise nearly £20,000 for the Soldiers’ Charity to help support the injured and bereaved and orphaned from recent conflicts. You may recall one element of the fund raising was a run / walk of 19.28km on Big Curry Day: this distance being 10 metres for each of the 1928 servicemen killed or wounded in Afghanistan up to the end of December 2010.
The distance for 2012 will depend on the number of casualties at year end: as of 15th November we would be doing 22.09 km (befitting 2209 casualties). We fear a final distance of 22.5 km
Many of the staff who took part last year plan to do so again. Many others are going to have a crack for the first time. Runners confirmed so far are Mr Davie, Miss Burrell, Mr Chantrell, Mr Lumsden, Mr de Quincey, Miss Hooker, Mr Rees, Mr Day, Mr Tozzi, Mrs Emeny, Mr Simon, Mr Cullis, Mrs Theakston, Miss Faux, Mrs Ariss, Miss Laker, Miss Burns, Miss Noble, Mr Wade, Mrs Corbett, and Mr Storrie. Ex infantryman Mr Harmer, now site manager, is speed marching it with a 45lb pack; Miss Stichbury is riding a bike around the course, three laps. Many other staff are walking the route, and walking 19km proved pretty tough of itself last time. These include Miss Barton, Mrs Jukes, Miss Ashwell, Mrs Hall, Mrs Brodie, Mr Muriss, Mrs Whalen, Mrs Wright, Miss Richards, Mrs Bailey, Mrs Balbirnie, Mrs Turner, Miss McNaught, Mr Pitman, Mrs Jackson, Mrs Apsa, Mrs Brown, Mrs Williams, Mrs Lines, Mrs Cunnington, Mrs Watts, Mrs Priestland, Mrs Balmer, Mrs Jennings (albeit without Doug the famous Chicken-eating Dog), and Mr Haynes
Our search for the flattest route in the area has happed upon an out and back route from School down to Coldharbour Lane, then along the Lea Valley cycle way as far as Luton Parkway station; up Westfield; then a loop down the steps at Ambrose Lane onto the Nicky Line; down through Rothamstead Park; and then a glorious return through town before somehow trying to ascend the gradient up to school after 12 miles +. Almost all of the route is therefore away from any traffic, and much of it is picturesque. The section beside the sewage works is especially pretty.
What about you? We are operating the event on a Saturday morning and have completed the necessary checks to be confident we can open it to parents, Old Georgians, and anyone else with a connection to the school.
Many school staff are walking instead of running.
Many runners will be walking by the end.
We welcome anyone with a connection to the school, from parents to elder siblings to Old Georgians to ex-staff to wives and partners and children of existing staff members. We are not bothered how you seek to traverse the course so long as it will be exhausting for you and safe for others. The event is not timed and thus has the English Athletics status of a “Fun Run”. My how we laughed. Everyone who finishes gets a deluxe St George’s Great Curry Run medal.
Current Georgians can take part so long as they are in Year 13 and will be 18 years old at the start of the event. People must not take part against medical advice, and anyone thinking of exercising beyond a comfortable level should take such advice before starting energetic training. We will in due course require submission of a standard pre endurance event medical form, as per any event run under the auspices of UK Athletics. The value of your investments can go down as well as up. Terms and conditions apply. There will be an entry fee of £15-£20 or so to cover necessary admin, refreshments en route, Hoodie or T-shirt etc etc.
The other proviso is that everyone taking part, as last year, commit to raising £100 minimum through sponsorship for the Soldiers’ Charity via cash donation, or through the event “Just Giving” or text donation
